How is a watch dial made?

The manufacturing of this major piece, the main component of our watches, attracts attention and is, inevitably, a vector of desire. Maison Beaubleu provides you with several models and available in different colors. Let's take a closer look at how the creation of a watch dial is established.

The watch dial: the composition

The dial is made of a copper plate. On the latter, we find a white enamel and a counter-enamel. The pastilles constitute stamped silver flakes, “taped” beforehand to the white enamel base and which are introduced during the baking process. Subsequently, a transparent enamel is applied to the straws, then fired.

The design of the dials begins with a rough sketch. The latter can be embossed or made of brass from a metal strip. At the same time, two buttons are planted within the edge of the raw part. Then, four stop holes are applied within them, allowing blocking of the blank at subsequent processing stations.

The step of creating the watch face window

This step consists of creating the window intended for the date. A decorative frame is added in relief. A hole is then created in the middle of the dial, at which the hands will pivot as soon as the process is completed. Continuing the process, almost discreet openings are created in which the brackets for the wall lights are carefully installed and fused to the back. To finish this work, the dial is marked with a punch at the base of the blank and therefore receives its final diameter.

The surface treatment stage

This is how the surface treatment task begins. With a polishing and satin-finishing device, which involves the use of a specific liquid (emulsion), the dials are polished then refined to have a beautiful shine. This is the sine qua non condition for the subsequent application of the sunray finish which is carried out using a brass brush pivoting vertically. This is the ideal time to then focus on color.

During the galvanic process, watch faces are usually colored either blue or black, depending on the model. It takes a certain amount of expertise to produce similar results across an entire series and ensure excellent quality in watch dial manufacturing. After rinsing with pure water and drying afterwards, the dials are now able to receive the application:
