How to adjust a steel watch strap?

Adjusting a watch strap is an essential step to ensure optimal comfort and impeccable aesthetics when worn on the wrist. Whether you've just gotten a new watch or simply want to adjust an existing strap for the perfect fit, understanding the ins and outs of strap adjustment is essential.

In this article, we explain how to proceed so that your steel strap fits perfectly to your wrist.

Adjusting a watch with a Milanese mesh steel strap

To adjust a Milanese mesh steel strap watch, you need a flat screwdriver or any other thin, flat tool. Then simply proceed as follows:

  • Locate the hook in the center of the clasp and hold it firmly between two fingers.
  • Pry up the hook with the flathead screwdriver, making it easier to move the clasp.
  • Slide the clasp to the desired strap length.
  • Lock the clasp by pressing it until you hear a click.

Adjusting a steel link strap watch

The link strap is more complex and may require additional steps to adjust. However, this operation is within the reach of all watch owners.

To adjust such a strap, simply take a small hammer and a very fine screwdriver or better yet, a pin driver and follow the following steps:

  • Measure your wrist and estimate how many links you need to remove.
  • Identify the direction of the arrows engraved on the steel strap.
  • Place the screwdriver on the pin and tap with the small hammer, respecting the direction of extraction of the pin which is indicated by the arrows.
  • Once the pin is partially out, use pliers to remove it completely.
  • In this way, remove the number of links necessary to shorten the strap.
  • Reassemble the strap by replacing the pin in the opposite direction to that indicated by the arrows. The pin has a rounded end which should be inserted first.
